"Four young men in the prime of life, playing with absolute conviction"
The Maxwell Quartet has received both Jury 1st Prize and the Audience Prize at the prestigious Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition in Norway. In addition to the first prize of 15.000 euros, the quartet is invited to return to next year's Trondheim Kammermusikk Festival, and will also feature in Stavanger Chamber Music Festival (NO), Tivoli Concert Series (DK), Amsterdam String Quartet Biennale (NE) and Fest-spiele Mecklenberg (DE).
"We've always had a love/hate relationship with competitions, which can give you a massive boost in terms of profile and level of playing, but can also be very stressful and disconcerting. Trondheim offered us something different; a lovely atmosphere, a culture of real music-making and set within a really interesting music festival in a great city. We were so honoured and humbled to have received first prize from the Jury, but particularly happy to have received the audience prize - the audience in Trondheim are fantastic, knowledgable and enthusiastic music-lovers - and we are really looking forward to returning to Trondheim in 2018!"
"wonderful playing... so many great qualities... fiery and imaginative readings"

The Maxwell Quartet has just returned from recording its debut CD, due for release in January 2019, on Linn Records. The disc is to feature several lesser-known string quartets by Haydn alongside arrangements of Scottish folk music by the quartet. The quartet say: "We are so excited to share our first recording with you all. Working with Philip Hobbs of Linn Records has been a fantastic, rewarding process which brought to light many aspects of Haydn's wonderfully natural, playful and folk-influenced compositional style in this era. To have the chance to combine this with some of our own compositions based on our favourite Scottish traditional music has been a real privilege, finding links between the two in style, theme and character and bringing something new to both musical styles."

The quartet is delighted to congratulate Colin and his partner Yoko on the birth of their son, and welcome to the quartet clan young Kai James Misumi Scobie! Kai was born on 23rd June 2018 and is a gorgeous wee boy. The quartet is looking forward to introducing him to the world of late Beethoven string quartets and much more, but acknowledge there is plenty of time for that later. Congrats Colin!
